This shirt, known as "The Cherry and White Squares" was one of the first used by Southampton FC. The club was founded in 1885 by the Young Men's association of St Mary's Church and was originally regognised as St Mary's YMA FC. This was until 1894 when the club reached the Southern League and was renamed Southampton St Mary's FC until 1896 when the "St Mary's" suffix was dropped leaving the nickname "The Saints" as the only remaing church connection.
This shirt is long sleeved and is made from drill cotton.
